If you’ve read my blog Mindfulness and Meditation, and want to know more about how to practice mindfulness at home, you’ve come to the right place.
Mindfulness is all about living in the present, without judgement or preconceived notions of how you should be. It is about acknowledging your thoughts, emotions, and feelings as they crop up, without holding on to them. It’s about being open and receptive to all that you encounter in the present moment.
I’ve assembled a list of my top 10 favourite ways to help develop mindfulness on a daily basis. These are things that you can easily incorporate into you life:
1. Breathing break – Take one minute out of you day (or your morning, or each hour) to consider your breath. Turn your focus inward and feel your breath move in and out of your body.
2. Observation break – After you’ve taken a breathing break, focus your eyes on something in the room around you. Examine all aspects and features of it, and contemplate it for a minute. See what thoughts crop up as you calmly observe.
3. Mindful repetition – Choose something that you do multiple times every day, be it turn on a light switch, sit down at your desk, touch a door handle. Each time you do this one thing, do it with awareness and intention.
4. Notice your routines – Try not to let routines pass you by. When you’re loading the dishwasher, brushing your teeth, or raking leaves, be aware of each sound, movement, and reaction from your body.
5. Appreciation x 3 – Each day, write down three things or actions that you see, experience, or do often, but rarely stop to appreciate.
6. Listen with care – Once a day, put on a song and listen to each sound, beat, note, and inflection.
7. Practice gratitude – Make a conscious effort to have gratitude for all of the good things in your life – big and small. Write them down or talk about them with a friend.
8. Listen to your intuition – Being mindful also means listening to our inner voice and the signs and signals that our body provides.
9. Eliminate distractions – Take a few hours to go through your house and eliminate all unnecessary distractions. Organize yourself, turn off your phone for a set period of time, and give away old or unwanted clothes or household items. Be mindful of your possessions and try to de-clutter your life.
10. Speak kindly to yourself – Practice self-acceptance by speaking kindly to yourself. Quell your negative thoughts and honour your inner loveliness.
